Reading a vernier caliper: a 68-second reenactment recorded in the KELIBRON 3D lab, with English captions. The steps below are the captions in order, and you can do the same measurement yourself in the lab.
What happens in the video
- 0:00 Reading a vernier caliper
- 0:05 Jaws closed: the vernier zero lines up with the main-scale zero.
- 0:09 One division on the slider: 0.02 mm, and the matching line moves one place.
- 0:12 Two divisions: 0.04 mm.
- 0:15 Three divisions: 0.06 mm.
- 0:18 Four divisions: 0.08 mm.
- 0:21 Five divisions: 0.10 mm. Each step, the aligned line hops one place.
- 0:25 Now measure the bush OD: deep between the jaws, square to the axis.
- 0:30 Close gently until both faces touch.
- 0:36 Read the main scale first: the whole millimetres left of the vernier zero.
- 0:41 Then find the one line that aligns: divisions times 0.02 mm.
- 0:47 The same bush: inside jaws across the bore.
- 0:55 And the depth rod into a blind hole.
