Units and where the millimetre comes from
Units and where the millimetre comes from: a 35-second reenactment recorded in the KELIBRON 3D lab, with English captions. The steps below are the captions in order, and you can do the same measurement yourself in the lab.
What happens in the video
- 0:00 Units and where the millimetre comes from
- 0:05 One measurement that passes. Keep the caliper where it is.
- 0:11 Press UNIT: the same size, now in inches, in steps of half a thousandth. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm.
- 0:17 Back to millimetres: the size did not change, only the unit.
- 0:22 Where does this millimetre come from? This caliper is calibrated against gauge blocks, the blocks in a calibration laboratory, the laboratory against a national metrology institute, and the institute realises the metre from its definition.
In the course
- Measurement basics · Length units and traceability — Convert between metric and inch units and explain what makes a reading traceable.
